How to Get to Universal Studios UK - Complete Transport Guide

Universal Studios UK will be located in Bedford, approximately 50 miles north of London. Here’s everything you need to know about getting there.

BY TRAIN:

From London:

  • St Pancras International to Bedford: 45-50 minutes
  • Kings Cross to Bedford: 50-55 minutes
  • Trains run every 15-30 minutes
  • Estimated cost: £15-30 return (off-peak)

Wixams Station (Nearest to Park):
The new Wixams station is being upgraded specifically for Universal UK. It will be approximately 2-3 miles from the park entrance, with shuttle buses or walking paths expected.

From Other UK Cities:

  • Birmingham: 1h 30m (via London or direct services)
  • Manchester: 2h 30m (via London)
  • Leeds: 2h 45m (via London)
  • Edinburgh: 5h (via London)

BY CAR:

M1 Motorway Access:
Bedford sits directly on the M1, making it easily accessible from most of the UK.

From London: 1h 15m (50 miles via M1)
From Birmingham: 1h 30m (80 miles via M1)
From Manchester: 2h 45m (150 miles via M1/M6)
From Leeds: 2h 30m (130 miles via A1/M1)

Parking:
Whilst official parking details haven’t been announced, based on Universal Orlando:

  • Expect large multi-storey car parks
  • Estimated cost: £20-30 per day
  • Premium parking closer to entrance: £40-50

BY AIR:

Luton Airport (Closest):

  • Distance: 18 miles from Bedford
  • Transfer time: 30-40 minutes by car
  • Train connection: Luton Airport Parkway to Bedford (40 mins)

Other London Airports:

  • Stansted: 45 miles (1h by car)
  • Heathrow: 70 miles (1h 30m by car)
  • Gatwick: 90 miles (1h 45m by car)

All airports have direct train connections to London, then onward to Bedford.

BY COACH:

National Express and other coach services will likely add Bedford routes once the park opens. Based on other UK attractions:

  • Expected services from major cities
  • Budget-friendly option
  • Journey times 20-30% longer than trains

ORLANDO COMPARISON:

Having visited Orlando many times, here’s what I expect will be different:

Better Public Transport:
Unlike Orlando (which basically requires a car), Bedford has excellent rail connections. You genuinely won’t need a car if staying in Bedford town centre.

Closer to Major Cities:
Orlando is isolated. Bedford is 50 miles from London, making day trips viable. In Orlando, you’re committed to multi-day visits.

UK Weather Factor:
Covered walkways from transport hubs will likely be standard (unlike Orlando’s open-air parking structures).

MY RECOMMENDATIONS:

For UK Visitors:
Train is easiest. Book advance tickets for best prices.

For International Visitors:
Fly to Luton or Heathrow, train to Bedford, stay local.

For Families:
Car gives flexibility but adds cost (parking, petrol, hire). Weigh up train family tickets vs car costs.
