Mixed week this time around. A confirmed pub name, engineering signals about what happens after the Manor Road closure, and renewed enthusiast attention on which British IPs Universal are locking in. Here is what has shifted since Sunday.
The Fletton Brick: Wetherspoon Names It
Wetherspoon have submitted their formal alcohol licensing application for the Kempston site and confirmed the pub name: The Fletton Brick.
The name is a proper Bedfordshire reference. Fletton bricks were the specific type manufactured at the Stewartby brickworks, and they were used to build a significant portion of Britain’s twentieth century housing stock. The Wetherspoon interior will almost certainly lean into the brickmaking heritage angle when it opens on 1 September.
That is a genuinely thoughtful naming decision. Wetherspoon do their local naming research properly and it lands well when they do. Compare it to some of their more generic pub names elsewhere and you can see the effort.
Manor Road: The Overbridge Signal
The Manor Road closure has now been running for nine days and drone footage has caught something significant. Heavy geotechnical core drilling rigs have been deployed directly inside Manor Road and on the adjacent South View cottage plot. This kind of subsoil load testing is the engineering step that precedes structural foundation design for major bridge or road realignment work.
The drilling activity is consistent with preparation for a Manor Road overbridge — a permanent grade separated crossing that would carry Manor Road over the East West Rail line and eliminate the existing level crossing bottleneck. Universal have publicly said further Manor Road traffic management will be required after October, but they have not confirmed an overbridge specifically.
That said, this is what you would drill for if you were designing an overbridge. Watch for a formal SDO filing update in the next few weeks.
The Vine Cottages Compound Advances
Cherry pickers have arrived at the hollowed out guard house, the adjacent perimeter wall has been fully levelled, and formal demolition dockets have been filed. The Vine Cottages Construction Compound is being set up in real time.
Alongside this, three new mobile CCTV mast towers have gone up around the concrete slab perimeter, interlocking with painted concrete security barriers. Twenty four hour automated perimeter surveillance is now in place ahead of the heavier machinery movements that will follow.
Twelve Acres Cleared for the Central Lagoon
Drone footage confirms clearing of a twelve acre woodland strip along the Core Zone boundary to divert Elstow Brook and clear the footprint for the resort’s central lagoon. This has been under way for a few weeks but the completed extent is now visible from satellite imagery.
The archaeological phase is genuinely wrapping. Almost all major welfare units and Heras fencing have been dismantled across the Core Zone grids, with only one active excavation grid remaining near the Broadmead Road farm boundaries. Once that grid signs off, this becomes a pure engineering site.
The 007 Chatter Returns
Inside the Magic published a renewed speculation piece last week on the potential for James Bond integration at Universal UK. This is not new news. The BBC first reported in April 2025 that a source close to Universal had confirmed a 007 stunt show similar to the Bourne Stuntacular in Orlando. What is new is the renewed enthusiast attention driven by Amazon MGM’s expanded control of the franchise post the 2025 acquisition.
From an Orlando perspective, a Bond stunt show would fit Universal’s existing operational model precisely. Bourne Stuntacular runs multiple daily shows, requires no ride vehicles, and delivers high visual impact at moderate operational cost. It is exactly the sort of anchor attraction Universal deploy when they want a franchise presence without committing to a full land build.
Property Market Whisper
Local agents are reportedly seeing increased buy to let and commercial interest across the MK42, MK43 and MK45 postcodes covering Kempston, Stewartby, Wixams, Wootton and Ampthill. Not yet confirmed by published market data, so treat as anecdotal. But worth watching whether this shows up in Q3 property analytics.
