The project crossed a significant threshold this week. The language around Bedford has shifted from enabling works to primary site access construction, and the road closures starting Monday make that transition impossible to ignore for anyone living in the area.
The Road Changes Starting This Week
Broadmead Road closes to all traffic from Monday 11 May for approximately four weeks. This is not a temporary inconvenience — two permanent site access points are being constructed during this closure alongside essential works on the railway level crossing. If you live locally or commute through this area, plan your routes now.
Manor Road remains on a stop-go traffic management system and that is expected to continue until mid-June. The reason is significant: a new permanent crossing is being constructed that will directly link the Lake Zone with the Core Zone, connecting the two primary construction areas of the resort for the first time. Permanent plastic ducting has already been concreted into place at the Manor Road entrance, designated for rerouting communication lines and utility cabinets currently positioned near the level crossing.
For context, Universal Orlando began similar permanent road integration work approximately 18 months before any vertical construction commenced. Bedford is following a very similar timeline.
The Logistics Hub Is Becoming Permanent
The old brickworks concrete slab that has served as the site’s staging area is now transitioning from temporary to permanent infrastructure. Hardstanding has been laid across a significant acreage at the West Gateway compound, and large deliveries of permanent security fencing and modular site office units are arriving. This is no longer a temporary compound — it is becoming the permanent operational base for the construction phase.
Drainage work is also underway near the primary entrance. A new trench has been excavated, heavy-duty piping laid, and a remote-controlled trench roller used to compact and stabilise the backfill. The internal haul road through the Core Zone is largely graded but has not yet bridged the existing drainage ditch. Construction traffic is using a temporary bypass until a permanent culvert or bridge is installed, which based on the current pace should happen within weeks.
Archaeology Expanding Into the Lake Zone
The most interesting development this week for those tracking the long-term timeline is the shift in archaeological activity. The final investigative scrapes are being completed along the Manor Road boundary of the Core Zone, with a visible reduction in heavy excavator movement in the central fields as teams shift to documentation.
Simultaneously, archaeological surveys have officially commenced in the Lake Zone to the north. Smaller specialist teams with targeted excavators are working through sections of the northern acreage near the ecology zones. This matters because the Lake Zone cannot enter its earthmoving phase until archaeology is signed off, and that sign-off needs to happen before winter.
Reptile fencing continues to ring the interior ponds with active monitoring to confirm protected species have been safely displaced before the next phase of earthmoving begins.
The Physical Footprint Is Growing
Large stockpiles of permanent mesh security fencing panels are now staged at the Logistics Hub with installation beginning along the southern boundary of the Core Zone, replacing temporary hoarding in several sections. Hedgerow clearance has continued near the Ampthill Road area and along the Broadmead Road boundary to create clear sightlines for the upcoming road widening works.
The site is visibly, measurably larger in operational footprint this week than it was a month ago.
This Week’s Discussion
The Broadmead Road closure starting Monday is the most visible sign yet that this project has moved beyond the preparatory phase into genuine primary construction. For anyone local to Bedford, how is the community responding to the increasing disruption? And for those following the timeline, does the pace of infrastructure work give you confidence that the 2031 opening remains on track? ![]()
