Universal have quietly done something this week that will matter more in the long run than any of the on site drama. They have activated the formal commercial front door to the project. Combined with genuinely industrial scale earthworks continuing across the Core and Lake Zones, this feels like the week the project machinery rotated fully toward supply chain and workforce activation. Here is what shifted between Sunday and Saturday.
The Portals Go Live
Universal Destinations and Experiences have opened two dedicated web registration portals on their official UK Project site. One for prospective employees looking to register early interest in operational jobs. One for UK based businesses looking to be added to the official supplier list.
The supplier portal explicitly targets four operational vectors:
- Construction and civil engineering
- Sustainable energy and infrastructure
- Food and beverage supply
- Theming, design, landscaping and facility operations
Universal Creative are also planning to host formal “How to do Business with Universal” seminars locally to help SMEs navigate the procurement requirements. That fourth vector, theming and design, is the interesting one. It signals that Universal want British creative and fabrication talent embedded in the actual visitor experience rather than being restricted to construction and back of house.
From an Orlando perspective, this is exactly how Universal build proper regional supply chains. Epic Universe used the same structured supplier onboarding a full three years ahead of opening. The businesses that get on the list early become the incumbents when the recurring contracts get let closer to opening. Local operators who wait until 2029 will be competing for scraps.
Recruitment context: the jobs portal feeds into 20,000 projected construction roles and 8,000 permanent operational roles at opening. Already surpassed 33,000 early registrations with 80% coming from Bedfordshire.
Core Zone: The Watercourse Clearing
Heavy machinery has completed a substantial 10 acre woodland clearance along the eastern side of the Core Zone. This aligns with the planned relocation of the Elstow Brook watercourse, which will route along Manor Road and eventually pass under a new culvert into the Lake Zone.
This is the largest single clearance operation on site to date. Universal are physically clearing the natural path of a brook and rebuilding it. The engineering rationale is straightforward: the current watercourse cuts directly through the intended footprint of the central lagoon and back of house. Moving it now, before vertical construction, is dramatically cheaper than building around it later.
Archaeology: One Grid Remaining
All physical excavation fences and welfare units have now been stripped from the main Core Zone archaeological grids. Only a single active grid remains near the Broadmead Road boundary. Ground teams have begun smoothing the completed grids in preparation for final planning sign off.
Once that last grid clears, the Core Zone becomes a pure engineering site with no further archaeological delays possible.
Mass Grading and the Dust Bowsers
Bulldozers, rollers, 40 tonne excavators and the primary 75 tonne Volvo excavator are all active in continuous coordinated earthworks. Because the subsoil has been baked dry through the summer heat, heavy tractor drawn water bowsers are running continuous dust suppression sweeps across the exposed zones to protect nearby Kempston Hardwick and Stewartby residents.
That is the sort of operational detail that will not make national headlines but tells you something about how Universal are approaching community relations. Dust from a site this size, blown across residential villages in dry August weather, would create a genuine local complaint tsunami. The bowsers cost real money to run continuously. Universal are choosing to spend it rather than deal with the complaints later.
Lake Zone: Haul Crossing Live, SUDS Lakes Ahead
The dedicated heavy haulage crossing on Manor Road is now operating with dedicated traffic management personnel governing every truck movement between the Core and Lake Zones.
Updated SDO filings confirm the Lake Zone floodplain remediation strategy. Extracted Core Zone soil is being deposited to raise low lying land by up to 1.6 metres, ensuring permanent roads sit 60cm above historical flood peaks. The existing clay pit lakes will be re profiled and deepened. A brand new lake is being excavated near the railway line specifically to handle grey water, rainwater harvesting and site run off. Genuine sustainable urban drainage system engineering, not just token green infrastructure.
Historic Brickworks Gates Demolished
Demolition crews have removed the historic brick entrance gates that marked the original Stewartby brickworks. This clears the path to expand the Vine Cottages Construction Compound. The gates were the last standing decorative brickwork from the original works.
Alongside that, mini excavators are now clearing netting, brush and old brickwork rubble around the recently vacated badger set on the concrete logistics slab. The badgers were humanely relocated late last year and the ground is now being prepared as a sorting facility.
Wixams East Gateway
Two active geotechnical drilling rigs have been deployed at the Wixams transport interchange site, taking deep soil core samples across the recently cleared woodland footprint. The rigs are gathering ground stability data to inform the design of the resort’s major coach station and rail interchange complex.
A421 Survey Works
Overnight lane closures along the A421 dual carriageway are reportedly scheduled for late August 2026 to allow Universal’s transport survey teams to gather load bearing profiles and structural survey data for the upcoming grade separated overbridge junction that will connect the A421 directly into the West Gateway Zone. Worth confirming exact dates via National Highways closer to the time.
Manor Road Closure Update
We are into week three of the ten week closure. Diversions holding up better than expected. Kempston Hardwick station access maintained from the west via Woburn Road as Universal committed, though we have heard from Wixams residents this week that taxi and Uber availability at that access point is genuinely limited. Worth flagging back to Universal if you are affected.
