Wixams Station Upgrade: How 8.5 Million Visitors Will Reach the Resort

Planning a world-class theme park is about more than just rollercoasters; it’s about moving millions of people efficiently. This week, new analysis reveals just how much the Bedfordshire infrastructure is about to transform.

The £300m Wixams Expansion

The SDO makes one thing clear: the current transport plans weren’t big enough.

The Upgrade: Originally designed as a local two-platform station, the Wixams railway station plans have been expanded into a massive four-platform transport hub.

Timeline: Procurement is estimated to run from February 2027 through November 2030, ensuring the station is ready for the park’s 2031 debut.

Connection: This station will be the primary gateway for international visitors arriving via London St Pancras (only 50 miles away), effectively making the park a “commutable” day trip for millions.

The “19 Hotel” Shortfall

A data-led study released on February 3, 2026, highlights a massive opportunity for local investment.

The Gap: To support the projected 8.5 million annual visitors, Bedfordshire will need at least 19 new hotels and 93 restaurants in the immediate vicinity.

The Comparison: For context, Disneyland California has nearly 200 restaurants within two miles—Bedford currently has four.

Infrastructure Works: On-site this week, survey teams were spotted near the A421 and Manor Road junctions, prepping for the massive slip-road upgrades required to handle the traffic.

What This Means for 2031

Universal is committing significant funds to ensure the “arrival experience” is seamless. Between the expanded Wixams station and the new dedicated slip roads off the A421, the resort is being built to handle crowds that dwarf anything currently seen in the UK leisure market.

Enthusiast Insight: This station expansion is the “smoking gun” for the scale of this project. You don’t build a 4-platform hub for a small park. This is the start of a multi-decade transformation of the region.

I don’t live too far from Wixams village either. Hope there’s more positives than negatives!

Being that close to the village, you’ll definitely have a front row seat! The big ‘positive’ is the upgrade itself, instead of the original small station, we’re now getting a much larger four platform hub to handle the Universal crowds, which should mean much better rail links for us locals in the long run. The ‘negative’ is mainly the wait; they’ve paused the original build to redesign it for the bigger station, so while we’ll see surveys this year, the main work won’t really kick off again until 2027
